Stock Market Today (October 27): Sensex, Nifty Fall As Investors Track Oil Prices

Both the Nifty and the Sensex began the trading day on a disappointing note. The Nifty declined over 60 points and opened at 22,708.80 and the Sensex declined over 200 points and opened at 73,484.38. Sectoral indices traded mixed in early trade. The Indian rupee opened at 95.17 to the dollar versus Monday’s close of 95.19 to the dollar. Crude oil prices remained elevated with Brent crude trading near 115 dollars per barrel (at the time of filing this copy).
Business Economist and Managing Partner Talk The Walk LLP, Sanchita Mukherji told Times Now Digital, “the stock market’s flat-to-mildly negative opening, alongside positive mid- and small-cap performance today, suggests that investors are not turning uniformly risk-averse; there is selective buying beneath the headline indices. We must acknowledge the external pressures — Brent crude near $115 a barrel, geopolitical uncertainty and sustained FII selling — but these are near-term headwinds rather than a complete verdict on India’s economic fundamentals. The fact that broader market segments are holding up is worth watching as the session progresses. The Jio Platforms IPO may also be absorbing some liquidity temporarily, although we should not overstate its role. India’s domestic savings pool, institutional participation and growth drivers continue to provide an important counterweight to foreign flows.
“I also believe India’s equity market needs to be viewed through a different lens from the global AI-led rally. What I would call the reverse AI trade is that India does not have the same concentration of AI-driven mega-cap technology stocks powering markets in the US and parts of Asia. Our investment case rests more on domestic consumption, financial services, infrastructure, manufacturing and the formalisation of the economy. That can make Indian benchmarks look relatively subdued during a global technology rally, but it does not invalidate the underlying growth story. The next trigger for a sustained recovery will be a combination of earnings delivery, moderation in crude prices and stabilisation in foreign flows. If IPO-related liquidity pressures ease after allotment and listing, that could provide an additional tailwind, but it is not a guarantee of a market rebound. My broader view remains constructive on India; the focus should be on economic fundamentals and earnings, rather than reading too much into one morning”s opening,” Sanchita Mukherji stated.
In the previous session, stock markets recovered from early losses; the 30-share BSE Sensex ended 482.92 points, or 0.66 percent, higher at 73,606.75. The 50-share NSE Nifty rallied 153.20 points, or 0.68 percent, to settle at 22,753.20, ending its four-day slide.
