Noel Tata Opposes Reappointment Of Venu Srinivasan & Vijay Singh At TEDT

Noel Tata has reportedly opposed the reappointment of Venu Srinivasan and Vijay Singh as trustees of the Tata Education and Development Trust (TEDT), marking a significant development within the Tata Trusts ecosystem. The move, first reported by TOI, is important as this is said to be the first instance where Noel Tata has voted against Srinivasan and Singh on any trust-related issue.
The report stated that Noel Tata was not alone in opposing the move. Trustees Mehli Mistry and J N Mistry had earlier also voted against the continuation of Srinivasan and Singh at TEDT.
Under the provisions governing the trust, unanimous approval from trustees was necessary for the reappointments to go through. Since complete consensus was not achieved, the proposals reportedly failed to pass.
TOI, citing internal communications, said the circular resolutions regarding the reappointments were not approved. As a result, Srinivasan and Singh are expected to step down as trustees of TEDT effective May 10, after completion of their current tenure. According to the Maharashtra Public Trusts Act, 1950, trustee reappointments require unanimity, which was not secured in this case.
What Is Tata Education And Development Trust?

TEDT, or Tata Education and Development Trust, is considered one of the key entities within the larger Tata Trusts framework. The trust is believed to oversee assets worth more than Rs5,000 crore and plays a major role in supporting education-focused philanthropic programmes.
Its activities include scholarship initiatives and educational development projects, making it an important institution within the group’s charitable network.
Recent conversations within the trusts have reportedly revolved around board representation, leadership direction and concerns linked to the performance of certain Tata Group companies.
The boards of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust were expected to deliberate on issues including Tata Sons board representation and the future of Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran. However, those meetings, originally scheduled for May 8, have now reportedly been pushed to May 16, adding to speculation around ongoing internal deliberations.
