Michael Dell has moved ahead of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos on the global billionaire rankings, making the Dell Technologies founder the world’s third-richest person for the first time. The shift came after a strong rally in Dell Technologies shares, which has massively increased the value of Dell’s stake in the company. On Tuesday, the technology firm’s stock advanced 1.9 per cent to close at a record $533.88. The jump added $4.6 billion to Dell’s wealth, taking his estimated net worth to $267.7 billion, according to Forbes.
Dell’s latest ranking puts him behind Google co-founder Larry Page, whose fortune is estimated at $277.9 billion. Tesla CEO Elon Musk remains comfortably ahead of the rest with a reported wealth of $942 billion.
Bezos has slipped to fourth place after Amazon shares declined 0.6 per cent. His net worth fell by $1.4 billion to $265.2 billion.
Dell’s Wealth Climbs Nearly 90% In 2026
The speed of Michael Dell’s rise up the billionaire rankings has been noteworthy. At the beginning of 2026, the 61-year-old entrepreneur was ranked 13th globally, with an estimated fortune of around $141 billion.
Since then, his wealth has increased by approximately $126.7 billion, representing a rise of nearly 90 per cent. During the climb, Dell moved past several technology heavyweights, including Meta co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison.
The latest move against Bezos highlights how quickly stock-market gains can reshape the fortunes of the world’s richest individuals.
AI boom powers Dell Technologies shares
A major driver behind Dell’s wealth creation has been the extraordinary performance of Dell Technologies stock. The company’s shares have gained 327 per cent so far this year, supported by intense demand for computing infrastructure used to build and operate artificial intelligence systems.
Dell owns roughly 40 per cent of the company, meaning major movements in its share price have a substantial impact on his personal fortune.
His wealth is not solely linked to Dell Technologies. Some of his assets are held through DFO Management, his private investment firm, which has investments spanning areas such as corporate credit and hotels.
The AI infrastructure boom has therefore emerged as a key factor behind Dell’s dramatic wealth expansion this year.
From $1,000 Startup To Global Technology Giant
Michael Dell’s journey to the top of the wealth rankings began decades before the current AI boom.
In 1984, when he was just 19 and studying at the University of Texas at Austin, Dell launched his computer business with $1,000. He eventually left college to concentrate fully on the company, transforming what began as a dorm-room venture into an international technology business.
Dell recently revisited that formative period on X, sharing a quarterly earnings report from 1984. He said the document was the very one that persuaded his parents to allow him to leave college and devote himself to the business.
The trajectory from a $1,000 startup to one of the world’s largest personal fortunes underscores the scale of Dell’s long-term wealth creation.
Michael Dell vs Jeff Bezos: How close is the race?
Despite Dell moving ahead, the contest for third place remains extremely tight.
After Tuesday’s market close, Dell’s estimated fortune stood at $267.7 billion, while Bezos was at $265.2 billion. That leaves only a $2.5 billion difference between the two billionaires.
Michael Dell: $267.7 billion, up $4.6 billion
Jeff Bezos: $265.2 billion, down $1.4 billion
Dell’s advantage came as his company reached a fresh record high in the stock market, while Bezos was hit by the decline in Amazon shares. With billionaire rankings closely tied to equity valuations, another major move in either stock could potentially alter the order again.
