Meet Shankh Mitra, The Kolkata-Born CEO Who Is Now The World’s Second-Highest Paid Executive

Indian-origin business leader Shankh Mitra has emerged as one of the world’s highest-paid corporate executives in 2025 after receiving a compensation package valued at $821 million. The record-setting payout places the Welltower chief executive second only to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, drawing major attention to Mitra’s remarkable rise from Kolkata to the pinnacle of corporate leadership in the United States. The compensation package is largely tied to the long-term performance of Welltower, the healthcare-focused real estate investment trust that Mitra has led since 2020.
With the company’s stock delivering strong returns, the value of a significant portion of his award has appreciated substantially.
Shankh Mitra’s journey began in Kolkata, where he earned an engineering degree from Jadavpur University. Seeking to expand his expertise in finance and investing, he later moved to the United States to pursue an MBA in Applied Value Investing at Columbia Business School.
His professional career started at PwC, where he spent five years building a foundation in financial consulting and advisory services. Those early years helped shape his understanding of corporate finance and investment strategies before he transitioned into the investment management industry.
Career Built On Investment Expertise

In 2009, Mitra joined Fidelity Investments as an analyst, marking the beginning of his career in institutional investing. He later held key roles at leading investment firms, including Citadel and Millennium Management, where he focused on real estate securities and portfolio management.
His expertise in the real estate investment sector eventually brought him to Welltower in 2016. Within just two years, he was elevated to the position of Chief Investment Officer. His leadership and investment approach earned him the company’s top role in 2020.
Since taking charge as CEO, Mitra has overseen the company’s growth across senior housing, healthcare facilities, and wellness-focused real estate. Under his leadership, Welltower has strengthened its market position while delivering significant value for shareholders.
Why His Compensation Reached $821 Million

The overwhelming majority of Mitra’s compensation package, nearly 99 per cent, came through stock-based awards rather than cash. The largest component, valued at around $789 million, is linked to ambitious long-term performance goals.
These awards are structured to reward sustained success rather than immediate gains. Much of the stock will vest only if Mitra continues with the company and Welltower achieves specific shareholder-return and market-value milestones over the coming years.
As Welltower’s shares continued to perform strongly through 2025, reports indicated that the value of the awarded stock had climbed beyond $1 billion by the end of the year, underscoring the long-term nature of the incentive package.
Mitra’s compensation reflects a broader trend of rising executive pay at companies that have delivered strong shareholder returns. His position as the world’s second-highest paid CEO places him ahead of several globally recognised corporate leaders.
Another Indian-origin executive, Nikesh Arora, also secured a place among the highest-paid CEOs of 2025 with a compensation package worth $100 million.
