Axis Bank CFO Puneet Sharma Resigns, To Step Down On August 31

Axis Bank has announced the resignation of its Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Puneet Sharma, marking a major leadership change at one of India’s largest private sector lenders. The bank informed stock exchanges on Monday that Sharma has decided to move on to the next phase of his professional career and will officially relinquish his responsibilities at the close of business on August 31, 2026.
According to the regulatory filing, Sharma submitted his resignation on June 28. Following his exit, he will no longer serve as a key managerial personnel or remain a part of the bank’s senior management team.
In its filing, the bank acknowledged Sharma’s contribution during his tenure and extended its best wishes for his future.
“The Bank places on record its appreciation for Puneet Sharma’s contribution during his tenure and wishes him the very best in his future endeavours,” it said.
The lender has not yet announced who will succeed Sharma as Chief Financial Officer.
Puneet Sharma has been serving as Axis Bank’s Group Head and Chief Financial Officer since March 2020. During his tenure, he played a key role in overseeing the bank’s finance operations while also managing several critical functions beyond traditional finance.
His responsibilities included legal affairs, company secretarial functions, investor relations and procurement. As CFO, Sharma was instrumental in supporting the bank’s financial planning and governance framework during a period marked by evolving regulatory requirements and changing market conditions.
Extensive Experience Across Banking And Financial Services

Before joining Axis Bank, Sharma spent more than a decade at Tata Capital. He joined the financial services company in 2008 and was elevated to the position of Group Chief Financial Officer in 2014, where he led the finance function for the organisation.
Earlier in his career, Sharma worked with Citibank N.A., handling treasury operations, structured cash solutions and risk monitoring. He also gained consulting experience during his stint at Boston Consulting Group.
A qualified Chartered Accountant, Sharma is an alumnus of the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad. His diverse experience across banking, financial services and consulting has made him one of the well-known finance professionals in the sector.
