Income Tax Return Filing Hits 5.9 Crore Mark by July 31, No Update On Date Extension

The last date for filing the Income Tax Returns has been closed on July 31, and the department has said that a total of 5.9 crore returns were filed till date.
Last year, the deadline for filing the ITR was extended till September 16, and the total number of ITR filed were over 7.3 crore.
According to official data, including revised returns, 8.7 crore returns were filed by individuals in FY2024-25, with a little less than 8.1 crore return filers in the segment.
The numbers for this year are likely to be lower as govt had announced major tax concessions during the last financial year, with income up to Rs 12 lakh.
Those earning income from a business or profession continue to have more time, with their ITR filing deadline set for August 31, 2026, subject to the applicable provisions.
There has been no update from the Income Tax Department as of now on extension of date.
