From Young Businessman to Parliament: Dhanraj Nathwani Becomes SP’s Pick For Rajya Sabha

Samajwadi Party candidate Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani has been elected to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh, following his nomination by the party’s national president Akhilesh Yadav. His entry into the Rajya Sabha brings a young professional voice to Parliament.
At a time when the youth is increasingly central to India’s political discourse, backing Nathwani is a strategic move by Akhilesh Yadav. Through Nathwani’s entry in the Rajya Sabha, the Samajwadi Party has sought to create a direct connect with the youth.
Akhilesh Yadav has consistently championed a modern and forward-looking vision for Uttar Pradesh. His tenure as Chief Minister saw landmark initiatives such as the Agra–Lucknow Expressway, Lucknow Metro, expansion of sports infrastructure and the laptop distribution programme. The laptop programme, in particular, expanded students’ access to computers and digital technology. For Yadav, empowering the youth means investing in opportunities.
During his tenure as the Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav’s government had put special focus on the state’s healthcare facilities too. It expanded the 108 Samajwadi ambulance service and inaugurated additional health centres. To expand opportunities in medical education, his government had added 500 MBBS seats in Uttar Pradesh in 2014. Dhanraj Nathwani’s experience across diverse institutional sectors brings an added advantage in strengthening this vision further.
Building on this legacy, Akhilesh Yadav’s vision for the future of Uttar Pradesh is centred on modern infrastructure, technology, investment, quality employment and greater opportunities for the state’s youth, towards a more prosperous, aspirational and future-ready Uttar Pradesh. His focus on improving access to quality education and strengthening sports infrastructure represents a broader vision for the state.
These are precisely the areas where Nathwani’s professional experience brings a distinct viewpoint to the table. His track record too shows that Nathwani’s journey will not end at just winning a Rajya Sabha seat and functioning like a conventional MP; rather, his tenure is expected to be marked by unexpected, high-impact moves and initiatives that redefine what an active parliamentarian can accomplish.
Dhanraj Nathwani, at 40, brings substantial professional experience to his parliamentary role. His exposure to business and technology has given him experience in diverse sectors that are closely linked to India’s evolving economic landscape.
Nathwani’s profile extends well beyond the corporate sector. He is the President of the Gujarat Cricket Association. Being a staunch devotee of Shri Krishna, he is also vice-chairman of the Dwarkadhish Temple Administrative Committee in Dwarka – the ancient city established by Shri Krishna after he moved from Mathura. He is also a member of the Shrinathji Temple Board in Nathdwara, Rajasthan.
Dhanraj Nathwani also holds responsibilities across institutions associated with wildlife, education, energy research and temple administration. His election to the Rajya Sabha now brings that experience into the parliamentary arena.
Samajwadi Party National President Akhilesh Yadav has consistently emphasised upon the importance of linking sports with education. His tenure as the state’s chief minister saw the development of key institutions such as the Major Dhyan Chand Sports College in Saifai. It combined schooling with professional sports training.
Nathwani’s experience in sports administration will provide another valuable aspect to carry this vision forward. As President of the Gujarat Cricket Association, he has been involved in sports administration and infrastructure. This brings him closer to issues of grassroots talent and opportunities for young athletes.
For Akhilesh Yadav, therefore, the induction of Nathwani carries a wider message. Backing a new-generation professional voice with experience across sectors reflects Yadav’s attempt to bring young voices into the political mainstream.
Uttar Pradesh is home to one of the country’s largest youth population. The development of the state requires expansion of avenues for employment and professional growth. Nathwani’s corporate and institutional experience therefore, brings a perspective focused on connecting young people with emerging opportunities.
