Cheaper Than Silver, Shinier Than Gold? The Truth About Bangladeshi Red Gold

Weddings, festivals or investments, gold is universally considered one of the most preferred option and with gold prices skyrocketing, the business of fake gold is also on the rise in the market. One such name trending in the market is the Bangladeshi Red Gold, which shines and weighs exactly like 24-carat gold, and is identical to precious metal by the looks of it.
The Bangladeshi Red Gold, also known as Aka Gold, is actually an alloy that can not only deceive ordinary people but also experienced goldsmiths.
In recent months, social media has been flooded with videos of the Bangladeshi Red Gold. These clips often show a shiny, reddish metal being melted, cut or tested, with creators claiming it as rare, valuable and even real gold.
According to reports online, the Bangladeshi Red Gold is actually made from a mixture of copper, nickel, zinc and sometimes tungsten to mimic the weight. A high-polish finish gives it a 24-carat like look.
This fake gold is sold at extremely low prices, sometimes reported around Rs 90 per gram, contrary to the thousands for real gold. It does not have genuine BIS Hallmarks or HUID codes and fails the X-ray Fluorescence test. Some online reports claim that the Bangladeshi Red Gold may not get caught in normal tests every time.
How To Differentiate Between Real And Fake Gold

Consumers are therefore advised to purchase only from authorised dealers, check for the 6-digit HUID code using the BIS Care app. To spot it, start with a simple magnet test: real gold won’t stick, but many fakes do if they contain iron, though advanced versions pass this, so always check for the BIS hallmark (like 916 for 22K).
Additional home tests include nitric acid (real gold resists, fakes turn green) or density checks, but for certainty, use professional XRF machines at trusted jewellers. Beware of forged stamps; stick to certified sellers to avoid this growing fraud that’s flooding social media warnings.
