Bharti Enterprises’ Founder Sunil Bharti Mittal Becomes 1st Indian To Receive GSMA Lifetime Achievement Award

The Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) has awarded its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award to Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, celebrating his contribution towards the evolution of global telecommunications and the expansion of connectivity worldwide. This distinction, granted to only a select few leaders in the GSMA’s history, recognises individuals whose work has fundamentally shaped the communications ecosystem.
The award ceremony took place at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, in the presence of Felipe VI, Pedro Sanchez, Salvador Illa and prominent figures from the global telecom industry.
Architect Of Global Telecom Firm

Mittal is widely regarded as a pioneer who helped redefine mobile communications across emerging economies. Under his leadership, Bharti Airtel grew into one of the world’s largest mobile service providers, operating across India and Africa. Today, the company ranks among the top three operators globally and connects more than half a billion customers.
Beyond corporate expansion, Mittal has influenced sector-wide policy and collaboration. Serving as Chairman of the GSMA from 2017 to 2018, he advocated for regulatory frameworks that promoted investment, fostered innovation and strengthened commitments to digital inclusion. His tenure reinforced the industry’s shared mission to bridge connectivity gaps and bring millions more into the digital fold.
On receiving the award, Sunil Bharti Mittal said, “I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition and sincerely thank the GSMA for this award. I accept it not only as a personal milestone, but as a tribute to India’s telecom journey, the collective spirit of Bharti, and the rise of Indian telecom companies on the global stage. Equally the award reflects the progress of an industry that has connected billions and belongs to the customers we serve, the teams who built our institutions, and the partners who believe in the transformative power of connectivity.”
He added, “Telecommunication is a force that expands opportunity, places essential services in the palm of every individual and unlocks human potential. Helping shape its evolution into a powerful accelerator of modern progress has been a privileged responsibility. As innovation accelerates, we will continue to work with our partners & stakeholders to ensure that growth advances equity and creates lasting opportunity for generations to come.”
A Career Marked By Global Recognition

This Lifetime Achievement Award adds to a string of accolades from the GSMA. Mittal previously received the GSMA Chairman’s Award in 2008 and again in 2016 for his significant role in advancing the global mobile ecosystem. In February 2019, he was also honoured at Mobile World Congress in recognition of his leadership during his chairmanship.
The Lifetime Achievement distinction remains one of the industry’s highest honours, reserved for leaders whose influence has left a lasting legacy.
