Why Russian Oil Shipments To India Dropped To A 10-Month Low In December 2025

India registered its lowest monthly import of crude oil from Russia in December 2025, reflecting the impact of the US imposing sanctions on two russian oil majors, Rosneft and Lukoil. India imported crude worth $2.7 billion in December 2025, the lowest since February 2025. The December supplies of Russian oil to India were around 27 per cent lower than the $3.7 billion worth of imports in November 2025, and over 15 per cent lower year-on-year (YoY). However, the emails sent to oil marketing companies—Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum, and Reliance Industries—seeking details of their purchases from Russia did not draw a response, according to a report by the Times of India.
Despite this reduction in December, Russia remained the biggest supplier of crude to India in 2025-2026, contributing 24 per cent of the $11.4 billion worth of oil imported in December, followed by Iraq ($2.4 billion), Saudi Arabia ($1.8 billion), the UAE ($1.7 billion) and the US ($0.6 billion).
India imported crude worth $105.1 billion from April to December 2025. In these three quarters of the Financial Year 2026 (FY26), India imported crude from 34 geographies, with Russia emerging as the biggest supplier at $33.1 billion, accounting for 31.5 per cent of the total imports. During the corresponding period in FY25, India imported $109.3 billion worth of oil, with Russia contributing around 36.5 per cent, amounting to $39.9 billion.
USA’s share increased, both in December and during the three quarters of FY26, compared with the corresponding period from FY25. Oil imports from the US amounted to $0.6 billion in December 2025, increasing $0.2 billion YoY, from $0.4 billion in December 2024, taking total imports from the US in the April to December 2025 period to $8.2 billion—an increase of 7.8 per cent YoY.
While the US President Donald Trump announced the trade deal with India last week, stating that New Delhi had agreed to reduce the imports of Russian Oil to zero, the Modi Government did not respond to that assertion, particularly.
