Hold Discussions, Restore Normalcy At Earliest: Nirmala Sitharaman To Tata Group

The differences within the Tata Group over the future of its holding company, Tata Sons, to be resolved amicably Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, urging the parties involved to hold discussions and restore normalcy at the earliest.
She described the matter as sensitive, involving significant commercial interests and business considerations. The minister said it was not something on which she would offer an immediate or detailed comment.
I think these are very delicate matters and matters where a lot of commercial, business acumen have to work, business cordiality have to work,” she said, adding that the Tata brand and its contribution to the Indian economy made an amicable resolution particularly important, she said while speaking at the Financial Express Leadership Awards in Mumbai.
“The matter should be resolved internally rather than played out in public. So they talk it out, make sure it comes back quickly to some normalcy. You cannot be spinning out like this in the public and for the maturity of that leadership we would like to have the scene settled sooner,” she said.
Sitharaman also referred to the Tata Group’s contribution to the country, including the role of the Parsi community in building the conglomerate into a global brand, and the range of activities in which the group is invested.
“This is a very critical component to Indian economy and therefore it has to be amicably settled between themselves,” she said.
In a separate development, Darius Khambata has declined reappointment as trustee of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust. Khambata sharply criticised the handling of the Tata Sons governance dispute, the engagement with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) over its regulatory status and attempts to separate the holding company from its charitable owners.
Earlier, in a response to Rahul Gandhi over the Tata Group issue, Sitharaman asked him to “stop politicising every issue”, noting it was a “commercial and legal” matter. But the war of words did not stop there.
