Tata Trusts Row: Oct 15 Hearing On Trusts’ Rejoinder To Mehli Mistry Complaint

The Maharashtra Charity Commissioner has scheduled October 15 for a hearing on Tata Trusts’ rejoinder to a complaint filed by Mehli Mistry. The hearing is set to focus on the Trusts’ response to the allegations raised by Mistry.
Mehli Mistry had challenged the change report filed by Tata Trusts, which recorded his cessation as a trustee of key Tata Trusts last year. The dispute relates to the governance and composition of the charitable trusts that hold a significant stake in Tata Sons, the principal holding company of the Tata Group. Tata Trusts had filed a rejoinder responding to Mistry’s complaint. The Maharashtra Charity Commissioner has now scheduled October 15 for hearing the Trusts’ rejoinder and in a sense marked the next stage of this ongoing dispute. Sources told Times Now Digital that Mistry is not seeking to return as a trustee of the Tata Trusts. In fact, his concern has been governance issues he mentioned earlier.
The developments and updates in these proceedings are significant as any determination on the change report is likely to have implications for the composition and governance of some of Tata Group’s charitable trusts. The Trusts are also central to the ownership structure of Tata Sons, with Tata Trusts collectively holding a majority stake in the group’s principal holding company. However, the October 15 hearing is on the rejoinder filed by Tata Trusts and does not, by itself, indicate that a final decision on Mistry’s challenge will be delivered then.
Industry experts believe this matter comes amid heightened scrutiny over governance and decision-making within the Tata Trusts and constant developments in the matter. The Charity Commissioner’s proceedings could offer further clarity on issues raised in the complaint and the Trusts’ stand and clarity on the matter. The October 15 hearing is expected to be closely watched as the dispute continues to unfold and the spotlight remains on stability and leadership within Tata Trusts as well.
