Russian Fuel Tanker Heads To Cuba – Showdown With US Blockade Looms

A tanker believed to be carrying Russian fuel is sailing toward Cuba, potentially testing the limits of US President Donald Trump’s tightening oil blockade as the island struggles through a deepening energy crisis. The vessel Sea Horse is expected to arrive in early March with nearly 200,000 barrels of Russian gasoil, a crucial fuel used for electricity generation, transport and basic services, offering a lifeline to a country facing severe shortages, said a Bloomberg report.
But its journey is far from certain. US enforcement efforts have already intercepted multiple tankers linked to sanctioned oil flows, and Washington’s expanded pressure campaign has disrupted supply routes, pushing Cuba closer to widespread blackouts and economic strain.

The shipment follows ship-to-ship transfers off Cyprus and reflects Moscow’s continuing role in supporting Havana’s fuel needs despite mounting sanctions and surveillance targeting so-called “shadow fleet” tankers.
Whether the Sea Horse reaches Cuban ports or becomes the next casualty of the blockade could shape the island’s immediate energy outlook — and signal how aggressively the US intends to enforce its crackdown on sanctioned oil movements.
